Anyway, here are some standout awesome things from this past month.
- Awesome TV finales: April and May have brought some of the most perfect TV series finales in recent memory. First up was Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a show that covered mental illness, body image and gender stereotypes in a refreshingly honest way, usually involving song and dance numbers! The finale stayed true to the show’s heart, while providing satisfying endings for each of the main characters. Next up was Speechless, a sitcom that’s been such an important part of how our family has understood and come to terms with JB’s needs. The finale (which aired before ABC announced it was cancelling the series) was so empowering and reassuring, and even though I know it is fiction, it gave me such hope for the things JB will accomplish. The best part? Star Micah Fowler replied to a comment I posted on Instagram about my heartbreak following the cancellation of the show. Talk about a class act! I will be writing a future post on my love for Speechless, but in the meantime, do yourself a favor and watch all three seasons now.
- My weekend away – I had a weekend in Maine all to myself a few weeks ago, and it was lovely. I’ll be talking about it more in my next blog post, but here’s a link to the organization that made my getaway possible, A Mother’s Rest. They offer respite trips to caregivers of people with disabilities, and they made a world of difference for me with just a few days away.
- Becoming by Michelle Obama – On my drive to and from Maine, I listened to this audiobook. Wow. Just wow. I knew I loved Michelle Obama before, but after hearing her tell her story, literally in her own voice, I realized how much I didn’t know about her experiences. Her strength and confidence continue to inspire me, specifically how she was able to balance sacrifice to others (family, country) with staying authentically herself.
What I’m looking forward to in the coming weeks:
- Modern Mrs. Darcy summer reading guide: This annual guide is one of the best tools to help me figure out what books to reserve from the library now so I can read them throughout the summer. So far I’ve finished two books on this summer’s list: Daisy Jones & The Six and The Island of Sea Women, and I’ve rated both five out of five stars (extremely rare for me, as I’m pretty picky). The next books I’m reading from the summer list are The Gown: A Novel of the Royal Wedding and Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, HER Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed. Stay tuned, and let me know what you’re reading this summer!
